About Us

How a dream, a story, and a stubborn love for animals led to a life with Vlcaks...

I’m a first-generation Canadian — my mom and grandparents immigrated from the Czech Republic when she was just 16. I grew up hearing stories about “the old country,” and no one shared them better than my Deda (grandfather). He was a gymnast, a high-level coach, and a proud member of the Czech Air Force — and, unknowingly, the spark behind everything that led to CZCAN Vlcaks.
One of the stories he used to tell was about the “wolves” he lived and trained with on base. I remember sitting wide-eyed, soaking it all in, needing to know more. Years later, as a teenager diving into research, I discovered that my grandfather had been stationed at the base where Karel Hartl first bred the Czechoslovakian Vlcak in 1955. My obsession began.
Over the years, I owned and worked with several working breeds and large breeds — a Sheltie, an American Eskimo, a Doberman — and spent time around other working dogs like Shepherds, other Dobermans and Pitties on the horse farms where I boarded. But the Vlcak had always been the dream. So when we established our family-run horse farm in 2011, I made the leap.
In December 2013, Kiska was born. She came home in March 2014 — and changed my life forever.
Kiska wasn’t just a dog; she was everything. We learned together, grew together, and she was by my side through the hardest moments of my life. When we lost her, part of me went with her. And when we lost Uro in 2023, that heartbreak came all over again. I know Steeley feels the same — Kiska meant the world to her too. Every Vlcak we’ve loved and raised since then holds a piece of our hearts and always will.
That’s something most people don’t talk about — these dogs become part of your soul. I’ve loved every dog I’ve had, but the connection with a Vlcak is different. They demand more from you — your time, your energy, your intention — and in return, they give back something rare. They make you better.
As we move forward with our breeding program, training, and future goals in showing and working, we’re excited for what’s ahead — not just for us, but for every family that welcomes one of our puppies home. Our mission is to promote the breed truthfully, with love, honesty, and transparency.
They’re wild, intense, brilliant, loyal, stubborn, and hilarious.
They are walking piranhas with a dash of Tasmanian devil.
And we wouldn’t change a thing.
Thank you for following our journey. We’re so grateful you’re here.
With love,
Monika, Steeley, Cheyanne, and Family
